News From the Cambria Historical Society

By CONSUELO MACEDO

Spring has sprung at the Cambria Historical Museum, 2251 Center Street, ready for guests arriving for the annual Bee, Butterfly & Bat Faire.  The Cambria Historical Society is proud to partner with such non-profits, and members look forward to the guests who also visit at the nearby Earth Day festivities at Greenspace on April 21.

It was gratifying to have a full house at the annual Recognitions Banquet held at San Simeon Beach Bar and Grill for the first time in three years.  Besides a delicious dinner, President Melody Coe did a remarkable presentation of the group’s status with its four properties, the Museum, Resource Center, Schoolhouse, and future development of the Bridge Street Historical Park, where the historic jail house will return to its original site.

Also generating interest was the slide show of little known historic photos Melody has researched and made available on the website at cambriahistoricalsociety.com and the CHS Facebook page.

Some of Melody’s expertise has been shared at the request of other experts, such as Gregory Anderson, Guide 1/Staff Librarian at the Hearst San Simeon State Monument. Anderson will be speaking to the Historical Guide Association as part of docent training on Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. at Santa Rosa Parish Hall, 1174 Main Street.  The public is welcome, with a suggested donation of $5.  Melody is working on the little-known history of the San Simeon Point, and shared information about his topic: The Woes and Blows of the San Simeon Shore Whalers.

In providing materials and portraits ongoing on display at the Cambria Library, Melody’s extensively researches women in action currently in ladies’ groups at local churches; University Women of Cambria; Native Daughters of the Golden West; American Legion’s Auxiliary to Post 432; National Congress of P.T.A.; and Girl Scouts, to name some of the organizations involved.  It became obvious that these groups rest on the shoulders of women who have gone before in building the community of civic service and fellowship, so the CHS acknowledge the following noteworthy groups in random order:

Cattlewomen’s Organization; Women’s Athletic Club of Cambria;  Women’s Sheriff’s Posse; Fan Drill Team; Women’s SWAT Society; Women of the Elk; Independent Order of the Odd Fellows Auxiliary; Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls; Red Cross Association; Ground Observer Corps; Women’s Relief Corps; Daughters of the American Revolution; Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War;  Cambria Christian Women’s Club; members of the Future Farmers of America; and the Culture Vultures Reading Group.  CHS hopes to have listed as many as possible and will add any that have been missed.

Ladies, we salute and honor you!
