Wildlife in Strawberry Canyon

By WAYNE ATTOE

Greenspace is collaborating on a multi-year, nationwide Smithsonian Institute project called “Snapshot USA” to learn more about mammal populations in habitats across the United States.  On Sunday, May 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Cambria (786 Arlington Street), Greenspace Director Lisa Murphy and an intern will report what was learned when using twenty “camera traps” twenty-four hours a day for two months in the Greenspace Strawberry Canyon Preserve. It is a first!

Because seating is limited, signing up in advance is recommended.  Phone the Greenspace office: (805) 927-2866, or email: admin@greenspacecambria.org.  A $10 donation per person that day is suggested to support the Greenspace Speaker Series.  The Series returns to UUCC two weeks later with Stephen Lloyd-Moffett, Ph.D. reflecting on “The Spirituality of Place: A Religious Journey in the Environment.”

Report on Earth Day 2025

Last weekend, Cambria’s calendar was brimming with events, including “Our Power, Our Planet,” the Earth Day 2025 celebration sponsored by Greenspace – The Cambria Land Trust and True Earth Market. The event took place at the Greenspace Creekside Reserve.  New this year were, among others: a gopher snake named William Snakespear! (Pacific Wildlife); tips for safely viewing the sea otters (seaottersavvy.org); and a battery-powered Jaws of Life (Cambria Fire Department) and “green” options at its station.

The Vyana Wellness Collective offered classes, and there were presentations about bats, hand-dyeing yarn, and California native plants.  Musicians Jonathan Shue, Jody Mulgrew, Lion Remain, and Storyteller Amber Atkinson offered non-stop entertainment.
