The Historical Guides Association is pleased to feature Emmy winning filmmaker Robin Smith’s delightful 30-minute film that will be shown on Thursday, May 15, at 6 p.m. at Santa Rosa Parish Hall (1174 Main Street). Her film tells the story of the club’s founding, challenges, and successes, and highlights the creation of the club’s building in San Luis Obispo by Julia Morgan, architect of Hearst Castle, and the first licensed woman architect in California. It is a testament to the resilient spirit of women at a turning point in history.
In this backdrop of the women’s movement, Miss Morgan emerged as a pivotal figure, her resourcefulness contributing to the success of the club and a building that stands today as a structural embodiment of her commitment to women’s spaces more than one hundred years later. Robin Smith has used film to tell stories for more than 30 years. This film is a work of art with the story told through watercolor illustrations and photographs from the past. It was recently selected for the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. Light refreshments will be provided and there is a suggested donation of $5 for HGA non-members.
The HGA is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the continuing education and inspiration of its members in all aspects of local and state monuments and other historical museums. It is a social group with an educational purpose and aims to bring together people interested in history. Meetings are open to the public.
