The 2025 Greenspace Speaker Series Continues

By KARIN ARGANO

Greenspace – the Cambria Land Trust is pleased to announce four more dates for its ongoing Speaker Series.  The Speaker Series fulfills Greenspace’s mission of community education.  Invited speakers explore a wide range of environmental issues and give the audience tools to engage in problem solving, and ways to take action to improve the environment.

The 2025 season kicked off with Sophia Barwegen from NOAA  in February, who gave a mesmerizing visual tour of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary.

The Speaker Series will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Cambria located at 786 Arlington Street.  A $10 donation per person is requested. All events will be held on Sunday afternoons beginning at 4 p.m.  Beverages and baked goods will be served.

On Sunday, May 4, 2025  Lisa Murphy will be speaking about the “Snapshot USA Project”, which she recently completed for Greenspace. Snapshot USA is a national mammal tracking project in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute.  This is a large collaborative effort to sample mammal populations with camera traps.  The study samples sites of habitats and ecosystems across the United States.  The data is compiled and added to a national database to monitor mammal populations over time.

Lisa is a Board Member of Greenspace and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia and Cuesta Colleges.  She is the co-founder of Gold Country Bat project and a past Park Ranger in Yosemite National Park.  She is also a California Naturalist, and Greenspace is thrilled to have her speak and honored to have Lisa on its Board of Directors.

On Sunday, May 18, 2025. Dr. Lloyd Moffat will speak to “The Spirituality of Place: A Religious Journey.”  Currently Dr. Moffat is a Religious Studies professor at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.  He is well travelled and a prolific writer who focuses on exploring religion and culture.  He finds spirituality in many places, including nature, the vineyard, and ascetic traditions within many cultures.

In 2010, he was awarded the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts teaching award and the President’s Community Service Award.  He lectures widely in the community.  His interests outside the classroom include communal living, wine making, and spending time with his family.  He holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara; a Master of Theology from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary; an M.A. in Religious Studies from UCSB; and a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College.

On Sunday, June 29, 2025, the speaker will be Derrik Williams. Derrik is a California Professional Geologist and Certified Hydrogeologist.  He received his B.A. in Geology from the University of California Davis and his Masters in Hydrology from the University of Arizona.  Derrik has been a groundwater consultant in California for over 35 years, working with public water agencies, cities, counties, irrigation districts, industries, and special districts.

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, the speaker will be Roy Dunn.  Roy is well known for his expertise in capturing amazing images of hummingbirds in flight using high speed flash techniques and equipment he developed himself.  In 2006, Roy officially retired from his high-tech career and has since pursued his lifelong passion of photography full time.  A dedicated naturalist, he relied on fieldcraft and custom equipment rather than coercion, contributing to conservation efforts through donated imagery.  His work, exhibited across the U.S. and represented by the Vault Gallery in Cambria, reflects a unique blend of art and science.
