By ASHLEY THOMAS and NICOLE THEVENET
Mrs. Joyce Carole (Harroun) Backhaus, 91, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, in her home in Cambria, California.
Born on August 19, 1933, in Clarence, New York, Joyce lived a life filled with adventure, generosity, and a deep appreciation for family and community. She shared a remarkable journey with her husband, Edward Backhaus, traveling across the globe to immerse themselves in different cultures and landscapes. She was a beloved sibling to her sister, LynnAnn, and aunt to her nieces, Nicole and Ashley, who continue to adore her and seek to emulate her life example. Whether exploring distant countries or enjoying the comforts of family at home, she embraced life with grace and vivacity.
Joyce had a passion for cooking, entertaining, and cherishing time with her loved ones. Her warmth and hospitality made every gathering special, as she delighted in bringing people together over delicious meals and shared stories. Her dry, quick-witted humor was appreciated at every gathering, and she was blessed to have a close community of neighbors and friends in Cambria, as well as the many places she called home throughout her life, who enriched her life immeasurably. She had a deep love for animals and took great pride in being a devoted dog mom to all her many pooches through the years. Beyond her personal joys, she was deeply committed to philanthropy. She was a steadfast supporter of local non-profits, charitable groups, and health advocacy organizations, and worked tirelessly to promote educational access for all. Her generosity left a lasting impact on many lives.
Joyce is survived by her sister LynnAnn Noyd (Dan), as well as her nieces Nicole Thevenet (Philip) and their children Bryce and Beckett; and Ashley Thomas (Sean) and their children Curren, Adler, and Merrick. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward, and her parents, Irene and Keith Harroun.
A Celebration of Life will be held this summer at the Old Santa Rosa School House; additional details will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation be made to the Cambria Historical Society (cambriahistoricalsociety.com) or the San Luis Obispo Food Bank (slofoodbank.org).
Joyce’s kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering generosity will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to share in her journey.
