The Famous Jazz Artist Series at The Harmony Café (824 Main Street) presents a tribute to the father of the jazz vibraphone–Lionel Hampton–the musician who made the vibes an important instrument in American jazz music. He worked with jazz musicians from Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and he was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
Performing will be pianist Marshall Otwell, bassist Luther Hughes, and drummer Gary Newmark, along with series producers Charlie Shoemake on the vibraphone and Sandi Shoemake on vocals. There will be one performance from 5 to 7 p.m., with reservations at $25 per person and an additional food and beverage minimum of $20.
