Greenspace Speakers: Cambria Mammals and Spiritual Journeys

By KARIN ARGANO and WAYNE ATTOE

In May, Greenspace’s commitment to community education will be doubled with presentations about a recent survey of mammals in Cambria and a reflection on the spirituality of place.

For both events, please join Greenspace at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 786 Arlington Street, in Cambria’s West Village.  Come early for beverages and baked goods.  There will be a suggested donation of $10 per person for each event.  Seating is limited, so to sign up for the events or for more information, please call the Greenspace Office at: (805) 927-2866 or send an email to: admin@greenspacecambria.org

The first event, on Sunday, May 4, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., is “Snapshot USA Project” with

Lisa Murphy and Joanna Padron.

Snapshot USA is a multi-year, two-month-long national mammal-tracking project in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute.  Lisa and her Cuesta College intern set up 24-hour tracking cameras in the Strawberry Canyon Preserve and other Greenspace properties. The results are now part of a national database.  Learn what they discovered.

Lisa is a Greenspace Board Member and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia and Cuesta Colleges.  A certified California Naturalist and former Park Ranger in Yosemite National Park, she co-founded the “Gold Country Bat Project.”  Greenspace is thrilled to share her experience and enthusiasm.

Then, on Sunday, May 18, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. is  “The Spirituality of Place: A Religious Journey in the Environment,” with Stephen Lloyd-Moffett, Ph.D.

Stephen is a well-travelled, well-published, and popular Religious Studies professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  In exploring religion and culture, he finds spirituality in many places, including nature, the vineyard, and ascetic traditions throughout the world.

He lectures widely (and well!) in the community, and he has received the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts Teaching Award and the President’s Community Service Award.  His interests outside the classroom include communal living, wine making, and spending time with his family.

He holds degrees in Religious Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara and in Theology from St. Vladamir’s Orthodox Seminary.
