May is National Tennis Month

By MARK BERRY

May 1–The United States Tennis Association has designated May as National Tennis Month. Designating a month of promotion for tennis gives coaches, facilities, tennis leagues, and Community Tennis Associations a platform to drive awareness and help bring new players into local programs, inspire lapsed players to pick the sport back up, and energize existing players to play more.  According to USTA, tennis is the healthiest sport in the world.  In fact, it is the sport that does more than any other to extend lives, with recent research suggesting that people who play tennis live 10 years longer on average than those who do not.

In Cambria, the only place to play tennis is on the six excellent tennis courts at Coast Union High School. These courts serve the high school, as well as the community, under the auspices of the Cambria Tennis Club.  The CTC, which is a USTA Community Tennis Association, was established in 1992 for the overall purpose of supporting and promoting tennis among CTC members, high school students, local residents, and visitors.  The availability of quality court facilities for all interested tennis players is due in large measure to the efforts of the CTC, which maintains the courts as part of its charter.  One of CTC’s responsibilities, pursuant to an agreement with the School District, is court maintenance and repair, which CTC dutifully has fulfilled now for more than 30 years, including periodic resurfacing.

All tennis players (regardless of age or level) who want to get back into the game, consider joining club members on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. for drop-in doubles.  Everyone gets to play.  Alternatively, get in touch with a member who can fill you in on the resources available for players of any level and find a match amongst club members for a game.  For more information, including a membership application, go to the CTC website at: cambriatennisclub.com, or call CTC at: (310) 717-5187.
