In 2022, Caltrans replaced two deer signs along Highway 1 with seven new ones. Currently, a study on Highway 1 through Cambria and San Simeon is underway and will continue through the end of 2027. However, for many Cambrians safety concerns go much further.
Many residents remain concerned about safety on local residential roads and streets adjacent to businesses. An online petition on Change.org has already gathered nearly 600 signatures in support of lowering speed limits throughout town. “Safety for All in Cambria” invites concerned residents to join this effort. As the saying goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, form an alliance”.
This community has already seen several successes from cooperative efforts, including:
–Main Street (near the high school) the speed has been reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph.
–Both entrances to Moonstone Drive now have a reduced speed limit of 30 mph.
–The closed tree canopy on East Main Street just past the bridge was cleared to improve visibility.
Safety for All in Cambria remains committed to advocating for more changes like these. If you are interested in joining to help ensure long-term sustainable safety measures for our town, please email Christine Siebuhr at: Csiebuhr@gmail.com. A group is forming and future meetings to share information and discuss changes are now being planned.
