June 5–Cambria is a beautiful village where people truly care about nature. One of the best places to see this love is at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve—and guess what? It is celebrating 25 years of being open to the public!
For almost 100 years before it became public land, this was a ranch where dairy cows and cattle roamed. Then, developers wanted to build houses, a golf course, and even a shopping center on it. But the people of Cambria loved the place just the way it was—wild, peaceful, and open to everyone. So, they worked together, raised money, and turned the land into a public preserve that everyone can enjoy forever.
That is the short version of the story. There was so much more involved in turning the Ranch into a preserve, including guidance from resource agencies, legal battles, and grassroots fundraising.
Today, the Ranch holds a special place in many of our hearts. To mark its 25th, the Friends of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve would like to capture some of the history and stories of this place that so many hold dear. Please submit a short story online so that we can save and share it.
