May 15–Please be especially careful driving for the next several weeks as newborn fawns will be making their way into the world. These fawns can barely walk at birth and are quite tiny. At birth they are only about 18 inches tall and weigh six to eight pounds. A few hours after birth they will start to walk and run a little to follow their mothers. And this is perhaps the most dangerous time for them because they will follow their mothers into the road. At best of times, full grown deer are hard to see. They may blend into their surroundings because their coats mimic the colors seen along the roadside. They often appear seemingly out of nowhere, or when rounding a curve, drivers may confront one or more deer in the road.
Slowing down will not deter anyone from getting to their destination. But it may save a wild animal’s life, and perhaps costly repairs to your vehicle. In Cambria, the deer living among us is a fact of life. So, let’s slow down, watch carefully for deer, and enjoy this wild and beautiful seaside community.
