Famous Jazz Artist Series Presents a Tribute to Irving Berlin

By IGGY FEDOROFF

On Sunday, April 20, Charlie and Sandi Shoemake will bring the music of Irving Berlin, dubbed the father of the Great American Songbook.  One concert will be held at The Harmony Café, 824  Main Street, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Berlin wrote hundreds of songs, many becoming major hits, which made him famous before he turned thirty.  During his 60-year career he wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films, with his songs nominated eight times for Academy Awards.

Many songs became popular themes and anthems, including ” Alexander’s Ragtime Band”; “Easter Parade”; “Puttin on the Ritz”; “Cheek to Cheek”; ” White Christmas”; “Happy Holiday”; “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better”; and “There’s No Business Like Show Business”. Joining the Shoemakes–Charlie on vibes and Sandi on vocals–will be pianist Madison Scott, bassist Dylan Johnson, and drummer Darrell Voss.  As usual, the concert is $25 per person with a $20 minimum food and beverage charge.  Reserve your seat by phone at: (805) 935-9007 or by e-mail at: charlie@talsanmusic.com.
